Or, at least maybe a different kind of drama. Thank you Charles Krauhammer for putting it so succinctly. Two snippets from this Op/Ed piece in particular just make me shake my head, the first at the beginning...

Religious fanatics, regardless of what name they give their jealous god, invariably have one thing in common: no sense of humor. Particularly about themselves. It's hard to imagine Torquemada taking a joke well.

Today's Islamists seem to have not even a sense of irony.

...and the second at the end...

The pope gives offense and the Mujaheddin al-Shura Council in Iraq declares that it "will break up the cross, spill the liquor and impose the 'jizya' [head] tax; then the only thing acceptable is conversion or the sword." This to protest the accusation that Islam might be spread by the sword.

As I said. No sense of irony.

Now, I mean no offense to anyone, but the man has a point. More blood has been spilled in the name of religion than any other single cause in the history of mankind (the next runner up would appear to be greed, both monetary and power-driven, but that is another story).

I normally can't stand Krauhammer, but he's dead on this time.

Thanks for highlighting this.

The danger is in over generalization. Not all Muslims are violent, just like all Christians are not Crusaders. I work closely with many Muslims, and have many Muslim friends. All of them are rather shocked at the response by the various councils. But they are equally as shocked at the Pope's comments. Only the extremists on either side are welcoming the chance to kill each other. Everyone else wants to be left in peace.

And I would hesitate to call religion the primary "cause" of war and death in the world. Those things you listed as secondary are actually the real causes; religion is just a way to get the mindless cattle on board for the raping of neighboring countries. So religion and stupidity would be the supporting causes. Greed is truly the real root of all evil.

True. And if I were King, I'd outlaw religion. But that's kinda like outlawing stupidity. For the most part, when I come across one of the religious type (christian, muslim, or other), I nod politely and won't be drawn in.
